September 2010 - Hamilton success at Grangemouth Congress

Excellent performances from two Hamilton members at the Grangemouth Congress.

Stephen Mannion led the way, coming equal first with 2 others in the Premier event on 4/5, just losing out on outright first on tie-break. Also coming equal first in his event was Bernard Cassidy, who also finished on 4/5 in the Minor. The tie-break was more favourable for Bernard who took home the Minor trophy on tie-break.

April 2010 - Nadia Ameur - Scottish Secondary Girls Champion

Well done to club member Nadia Ameur who became Scottish Girls Champion at the Scottish Girls Championship which took place in St Margaret's, Airdrie. Participating in the Secondary section, Nadia finished ahead of another Lanarkshire player (and member of Airdrie YMCA chess club) Hannah Friel who finished third.

This win caps a fine season for Nadia, who as well as becoming Scottish Girls Champion, has represented Scotland at the Liverpool Quadrangular Junior International and has seen her grade increase by an impressive 174 points.

April 2010 - Nancy Elder success

Hot on the heels of his contribution to the B team's success in the Jack Campbell Rosebowl, club member Arthur Mulholland was able to win the final of the Nancy Elder Tournament.

Open to individual club members from across Scotland, Arthur had to travel to Dundee to face final opponent John Robertson from the Dundee/Victoria club. With the game finishing in a draw, Arthur went on to defeat John in a 15 minute play off for the title.

April 2010 - Hamilton A wins Richardson Cup......

Joe Redpath, Steve Burns-Mannion, Pat Coffey, captain Andy Muir with trophy, Adrian Stalker, Tom Donohue, Chris Tweedie and Steven Tweedie
Congratulations to the Hamilton A team, which was successful in regaining the Richardson Cup, defeating a strong Wandering Dragons team 5.5-2.5.

Entering into an early strong position with wins on Boards 3, 5 and 6, a share of the bottom two Boards meant that Hamilton only needed half a point from the remaining 3 Boards to win the match. A draw for Pat Coffey on Board 4 guaranteed a win for Hamilton before the top two Boards entered into the final hour's Quickplay. Both remaining matches went the distance with Andy Muir losing out against Alan Tate, but Steve Burns-Mannion winning with seconds to spare against Mark Orr.

....and Hamilton B wins Jack Campbell Rosebowl

Having narrowly lost to Troon in the semi final of the Spens Cup, the B team faced Civil Service in the final of the Jack Campbell Rosebowl.

Gaining an early advantage with Matthew O'Donnell's success against Simon Bate on Board 2, the team maintained momentum throughout the match, taking additional points at regular intervals. Team Captain Robert Montgomery gained the vital point to take an unassaliable 3.5 - 0.5 lead before Arthur Mulholland and Duncan Walker closed out their games for an impressive 5.5 - 0.5 final score.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

March 2010 - Hamilton A retains SNCL Division 1 Title

Congratulations to the Hamilton A team which retained the Division 1 title for the 3rd consecutive year.

The squad comprising Andy Muir, Joe Redpath, Pat Coffey, Adrian Stalker, Connor Woods, Chris Tweedie, Tom Donohue and Duncan Walker went into the final round with 6 wins from the 6 matches played. Despite losing a tight final round tie against regular challengers Edinburgh West, the team's consistent performance throughout the season meant that they finished comfortably ahead of 2nd placed Dundee City A with 79% of Boards won.
